I love the What to Feed your Raiding Party book. That is an awesome idea. I have literally mentioned cooking techniques and had people have know clue what I am talking about.

As far as trying out new games, I think that it is very hard to tell without actual play. However, I always try to create a character as well. Sometimes it is incredibly complicated so I give up and try another game.
